Artist’s Statement
I create my collages on matboard or furniture using paper, colored pencil, marker, pastel, paint, chalk, fabric, and photographs that I take. My art style is realism, more or less, but there's something askew and symbolic about it. I think of it as enchanted realism, located at the intersection of reality and dreams or wishes and memories. I've been influenced by Henri Rousseau, who set out to reproduce the world photographically and ended up creating a world of enchantment; by the artists Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Marc Chagall, Brian Kershisnik, Della Wells, and Edward Hopper; by the writers Alice Hoffman and Dara Horn; and by many other artists, writers, and musicians. I frequently incorporate words and music into my collages, and I use certain items, for instance, a mailbox, a clock, or cello, to express a thought or feeling with a symbol.
about the artist
Born and raised in New York City, Ann Calandro worked as a medical editor for many years and is now a writer of fiction and poetry, a mixed media collage artist, and a classical piano student. Her short stories and poems have been published in print and online, and she has also written and illustrated three picture books for children. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries and published in journals and calendars. She has been practicing the same Brahms Intermezzo for several months now, trying to get it to the correct speed of Moderato, rather than playing it Lento.
